Students ‘go 12 rounds’ to land Junior Boxing Organiser award

Four students from Rudheath Senior Academy in Northwich have been celebrating this week after ‘going 12 rounds’ with Queensberry Alternative Provision (AP) to collect an England Boxing Junior Boxing Organiser (JBO award).
Libby Slater, Chantel Wood, Daniel Andrews and Ryan Green have completed a 12-week programme that teaches basic leadership skills which will allow them to run non-contact boxing games whilst under supervision.
The school quartet each received acknowledgement of passing the course, and picked up other awards and certificates, from Mayor of Cheshire East, Lesley Smetham, at a ceremony on Tuesday (18thDecember).
Course deliverers Queensberry AP – who work across Cheshire on a variety of projects with excluded students and offenders on day release before full release from prison – use boxing as a tool to promote discipline and respect.
“We are so proud of all the students and it was fantastic opportunity for everybody to come together to celebrate the progress that they have made over the past few months,” said Queensberry’s Nic Martin.
“To have the students delivering speeches and a practical session to everybody shows just how much they have grown in confidence from the young people that walked through our doors in September.”
The event was attended by family members of the students and a number of professionals, including senior staff from HMP Thorn Cross, Steve Docking (CEO of the North West Academies Trust) and senior staff from Rudheath Senior Academy.
Paul Cooper, also of Queensberry, added: “The graduation event was a brilliant way to bring the programme to a close and to see all four students achieving so many AQA awards – and the all-important England Boxing JBO Award – is testament to the hard work they have all put in.
“The leadership qualities they showed when delivering to younger students were amazing, and we hope that they go on to become England Boxing Level 1 coaches in the future.”
