Western Counties to host NACs pre-quarters

This year’s pre quarter-finals of the England Boxing National Amateur Championships 2020 will be hosted by the Western Counties, it can be confirmed.
The Acorn Youth Community and Sports Centre, Torquay will be the venue on Sunday 5th April as contenders are whittled down to the last eight in each Elite level male and female category.
It is the same facility (full address, Lummaton Cross, Torquay, TQ2 8ET ) as was used to host the successful Riviera Box Cup last month.
The decision to give this stage of English amateur boxing’s most prestigious championship back to the regions was taken after a high volume of requests to make the switch.
Seven regions all bid to host the event, but the championship sub-committee voted for a south region due to the quarter and semi-finals being staged centrally in the Midlands and Finals Day itself in the north at Manchester Central.
“We’re delighted to be taking the England Boxing National Amateur Championships 2020 pre-quarter-finals to Devon and it gives a fair spread of locations to which boxers need to travel to compete,” said England Boxing’s Competitions and Events Manager, Lynsey Lockey.
“Taking the pre-quarter final away from the three-day national stages of the event – with the pre-quarters, quarters and semis all previously held at the same venue – also gives club boxers a period of rest when potentially meeting GB and England talent boxers that are seeded and joining the championship at the quarter final stages.”
Western Counties’ Regional Association Secretary Mike Hemming said: “It’s an honour to stage the pre-quarter finals of this prestigious and historic championships, and we look forward to giving some of the best boxers in the country a warm welcome.”
Weigh-in will be from 10am to 12 noon, with boxing starting at 1pm.
