From 25th May 2018, the Government introduced a new legislation concerning data protection called The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
This law affects any company or organisation that holds information or data on someone. This includes information such as Clubs members’/boxers’ details. The GDPR (and a new UK Data Protection Act) will replace the current Data Protection Act and fines can be applied for those who fail to adhere to them or take basic actions.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies to any “data controllers” or “data processors”. Simply put, if you collect any personal data in running your club (which you will do if you have any members) then the GDPR will apply to you.
GDPR guidance for clubs
England Boxing has produced additional guidance for affiliated clubs and associations to help with identifying the key areas that they need to address in order to ensure the requirements of GDPR are met. These requirements can range from ensuring information is locked away or that there is sufficient security for any information kept on computers.
If you would like to know more about GDPR, please view the 12-step guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
While England Boxing will obviously help in providing information and support regarding GDPR, it should be stressed that it is each individual club’s responsibility to ensure the legal requirements are implemented.
