England Boxing to join social media boycott in protest against online abuse

England Boxing is supporting the world of football by joining a social media boycott in response to ongoing and sustained discriminatory abuse being directed at participants and players.

It will start on Friday (30th April) at 3pm and last until Monday (3rd May) at 11.59pm.

The move intends to emphasise that social media companies must do more to eradicate online hate and abuse, while also highlighting the importance of educating people in the ongoing fight against discrimination.

Greater filtering and blocking, swift takedowns of offensive posts, an improved verification process and reregistration prevention, plus active assistance for law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute originators of illegal content, are some of the ways social media companies are being urged to act.

“While we recognise that we can do more ourselves to help eradicate online abuse and are working towards that, we feel it is important that the big social media companies, who have the power to make a significant impact, take action to address these issues,” said England Boxing Chief Executive Officer, Gethin Jenkins.

Football organisations leading with the boycott are The FA, Premier League, EFL, FA Women’s Super League, FA Women’s Championship, PFA, LMA, PGMOL, Kick It Out and the FSA, while a host of other NGBs and sporting organisations are poised to follow their lead.
