Plea for coach help ahead of world record attempt

A well-known coach bidding to break a world record for the amount of consecutive hours taking boxers on pads is asking for help for his compatriots in amateur boxing to help him complete the challenge.

Mark Bebbington, Head Coach of England Boxing-affiliated New Era Boxing in Northwich, hopes to beat the current best mark set by Bradley Welsh of Holyrood Boxing in 2014 – and raise £10,0000 for charity in the process.

However, in order to verify the record attempt, he needs nine qualified coaches to be present for the 34-plus hours it will take to complete the bid, with each coach to take a shift of four hours each.

Bebbington’s challenge will see him pad continuous three-minute rounds with the traditional one-minute break in between.

Coaches will need to simply be on hand to ensure that the pad work is being carried out correctly as the bid begins at 8am on Saturday 26th July and concludes around 5.20pm on Sunday 27th June.

“We would love for England Boxing coaches to come forward if they can, be part of a world record and make this happen,” said Bebbington.

“There is nothing difficult to it as each coach will simply need to sit and observe, and they will be fed and watered, but it will obviously require some people to be available in the early hours of the morning. It would be an extreme act of dedication, but one that would be hugely appreciated.

“If we can raise the intended £10,000 for the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity (C-R-Y), it will mean that we can screen 200 youngsters and really make a difference.

“If clubs want to get involved then the coach and boxers can come along, who will be able to get sessions on the pads for their efforts.”
