New set of England Boxing-qualified officials trained and qualified

A new generation of officials have now qualified to serve at England Boxing competitions and events up and down the country.

A total of 378 people have sat and completed an online exam as the first part of the process, while another 139 have gone even further, competing their probation to qualify and receive their certificate.

After an initial recruitment campaign, new courses were rolled out last summer, with the first one taking place in August.

Since then, courses have been delivered in every region, for existing officials as well as new ones, with people qualified in the following positions.

• Grade C Judge/Timekeeper – 67
• Grade B Judge/Timekeeper – 34
• Grade A Judge/Timekeeper – 12
• Grade C Referee – 6
• Grade B Referee – 4
• Grade A Referee – 5
• Grade C Supervisor – 2
• Grade B Supervisor – 3
• Grade A Supervisor – 6

There are also three Grade C Supervisor candidates hoping to qualify before the return to competition.

England Boxing Coaching Consultant, Chris Porter, said: “We started the process of developing a national officials programme because we wanted to develop a hybrid approach where England Boxing worked in partnership with the regions.

“We now have an aligned officials’ pathway, with trained R&J Developers across the country, and we have developed a core model which focuses on what we need and value in officials.”

Mike Hemming, from the Technical, Roles and Officials sub-committee, who has assisted with the process, said: “There’s been a huge amount of work gone into reforming our officials’ development programme and I am really pleased with where we are today.

“We now have a consistent, streamlined and professional approach that we can all be proud of, and this can only be good news for every member of England Boxing.”
