Brandenburg Cup 2022: day four round-up
October 1, 2022 | by Matt Halfpenny
Five wins and two defeats represented a healthy return for the Team England squad on the final day of action at the Brandenburg Cup in Germany.
The tournament has been a welcome chance to get in some bouts and sharpen skills ahead of the IBA Youth World Championships 2022 in Alicante, Spain in November.
Things began well for Team England as Lauren Mackie kept up her excellent form by unanimously defeating Oliwia Formela of Poland at Under 52kg.
However, Emily Whitworth was unable to match her team-mate – who she has twice beaten in England Boxing National Youth Championships finals – after dropping a split decision at Under 57kg to Canada’s Marie Al-Ahmadieh.
Owen Ketley wasted little time in wrapping up another victory – his third of the tournament – as he stopped Under 54kg opponent Victor Tremblay, of Canada, in the first round.
In the very next bout, Frankie Wood bounced back from a tight 3-2 split the previous day to beat Denmark’s Mikkel Gribsholt by a unanimous decision.
After a mid-session break, Osama Mohamed continued his great week with a unanimous success, this time over Hungary’s Rafael Buza.
A cracking bout between Jimmy Dean Wood and Ramil Schafer went the way of the German 4-1, but the Westree boxer could nevertheless be proud of his effort.
It was left to Damar Thomas to bring down the curtain on a very successful week for the Three Lions squad as he secured a unanimous success over Elwin Mayue-Belezika of Sweden at Under 92kg.
England Boxing would like to thank all the support staff and boxer’s families and friends for travelling to support the team.
