A superb day from Team England’s boxers saw seven out of eight make progress to their respective next rounds on day four of the EUBC Schools European Championships 2022 in Erzurum Turkey.

The day was a real strength of girl power as all bout one of the bouts involved female contenders, with only one of the Lionesses unable to advance.

Layla Straughan ensured England began the day well at Under 40kg as she was a unanimous victor over Ani Mkitaryan of Armenia.

Serena Mali’s victory over Hungary’s Dzsenifer Horvath at Under 42kg was even more emphatic as the Cleary’s boxer enforced a second round stoppage.

Club-mate Jaya Kalsi was unable to make it a hat-trick of successive wins as she was edged out on a split by Lauren Crinnion at Under 44kg, but gave an excellent account of herself nonetheless.

The two Rubys –  Cuthbertson and Took – were the final two bouts of the afternoon session for England – and both emerged victorious.

Under 46kg contender Cuthbertson triumphed unanimously against Georgia’s Nino Bekauri, while Under 48kg boxer Took was a 4-1 winner over Ireland’s Mary Furlong.

There were three more successes for the Three Lions in the evening session as first Rosanna Bycroft notched her second win in as many days at Under 51kg, this time eliminating the home nation’s Alp Ecrin with a unanimous decision.

Rihanna Holden opened her tournament with an impressive unanimous victory over Lithuania’s Luka Vitkute at Under 57kg before the day was rounded off with Harry Scadeng, at Under 40kg, seeing off the challenge of Tomasso Orlando with another clean sweep of the judges’ scorecards.
