England Boxing Community Apprentice Alys Ball brought boxing to the streets of Whitley Bay last weekend (2nd July) as part of her Community Engagement Event.
With no signing up required, the event was open to the general public and gave passers-by the opportunity to get a taste for boxing.
Between 85-90 individuals aged 4 to 60 years old took to the ring to work on the basics and fundamentals of boxing, including stance, guard and throwing basic punches.
Younger participants were also treated to Box Tag, a game from the England Boxing Activator Course involving retrieving tabards from your opponents’ bib, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated.
Engagement throughout the event extended beyond the ring, with England Boxing staff speaking to roughly 180 parents and careers about local clubs in the community.
Alys was assisted by fellow England Boxing apprentices Gabrielle Reid and Joshua Jones, as well as coach Kevin Ball from Northumberland Fire.
The event ran alongside the ‘Fiesta Whitley Bay’ day, with Alys grateful for such a successful event:
“It was an excellent day and experience working with Fiesta Whitley Bay and seeing all of the different activities and stalls available.
“It was an amazing day, giving everyone an opportunity to get involved with boxing and provide them with information on local clubs within their area.”
