Coaches shine at second face-to-face Female Coach Development Programme session

The real life boxing scenarios ‘brought out the best’ in those on the second face-to-face workshop of the Female Coach Development Programme (FCDP) for 2021-22, held on Sunday 8th January.
Once again supported by the Maverick Stars Trust, the 10 coaches came together at English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, with each bringing along two boxers from their own gyms to help elevate the experience.
The day kicked off with an informative session from Boxing Science, delivered by Tommy Munday and Kieran Wright.
It gave boxers and coaches advice on making small changes in their warm-up routines that can massively impact on their performances.
Each FCDP coach was then given a group of boxers with varying weights and abilities, and tasked to ‘coach in the moment’, with support from their mentors.
They introduced conditions into sparring sessions to make it beneficial from a development perspective for all involved.
The focus of the day was around three key areas: space / ring awareness, tempo and distance control.
The boxers finished the day with a themed bag and pad session with all the coaches, following by a reaction game as a fun finish.
Lead for the day, Laura Sargeant, said “(England Boxing Development Coach) Amanda Coulson and myself are so proud of how much these coaches have progressed over the short period of time that we have been working with them.
“By placing them in real life boxing scenarios and being able to adapt their coaching to the situations, it really has brought the best out in them. I feel they now have more confidence in their ability to be able take on any challenges that may come their way.
“They have really bonded as a group and all support each other and hopefully will continue to do so.”
England Boxing would like to express its thanks to Boxing Science for their input to the day and Maverick Stars Trust for their continued support of the programme, as well as the mentors for once again supporting the coaches on their important development journey.
