With applications welcomed for the second cohort of the England Boxing Community Apprenticeship, Yorkshire apprentice and England Boxing National Amateur Championships 2023 finalist Madi Gittins reflects on her favourite aspects of the journey so far.

What have been the highlights of your apprenticeship journey so far?

I’ve really enjoyed giving children the opportunity to try boxing. Working in different schools, seeing children with smiles on their faces and enjoying trying boxing for the first time – that has been the highlight of the apprenticeship to me.

What skills have you learnt during the apprenticeship?

During the apprenticeship, my confidence has grown massively. Before I started this, I wouldn’t have been able to lead a session by myself, however having had more opportunities to do so, I have now been able to deliver some sessions on my own and they have all gone well.

How do you think the apprenticeship with England Boxing will help shape your career going forward?

I think the apprenticeship will help shape my future as, not only have I grown my confidence, but it has helped in other aspects and provided me with new connections with different partnerships in the sporting world.

The apprenticeship has also given me more understanding of how different partners and regions work together to give opportunities to a variety of target groups. This is something I will hopefully build on in the future.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about applying for the England Boxing Community Apprentice role?

My advice would be to go for it and not to worry in the beginning as everything will start to make sense a few weeks in. You mostly learn on the job and gain knowledge throughout as well as your line manager helping you.

England Boxing is currently seeking two remotely based EB Community Apprentices for the North and South (aged between 16-25) who will harness the excitement and interest in the sport generated by the Commonwealth Games by delivering community-based engagement events in partnership with England Boxing affiliated clubs and opening up pathways for sustained participation in the sport.
