In a landmark decision, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unanimously approved the inclusion of Boxing in the competition schedule for the LA 2028 Olympic Games.
The outcome was finalised during the 144th IOC session in Costa Navarino, Greece, which took place on 19th March 2025 and comes after a period of uncertainty regarding the sports Olympic future.
Just last month, World Boxing was given provisional status as the International Federation, replacing the International Boxing Association (IBA).
They were launched in 2023 and currently have more than 80 federations under their wing, with England Boxing being a founding member and supporting the movement from the very start.
Jerome Pels, Chief Executive Officer of England Boxing, welcomed the news with enthusiasm, stating: “This is a fantastic moment for the sport of boxing and for the thousands of athletes who dream of competing on the Olympic stage.
“The decision to include boxing in LA 2028 is a testament to the dedication of everyone who has worked tirelessly to safeguard the future of our sport. England Boxing stands firmly behind World Boxing in its mission to uphold the highest standards of integrity, governance, and athlete welfare. We look forward to seeing our boxers showcase their talent on the biggest stage of all.”
IOC President, Thomas Bach acknowledged the significance of the decision, “I thank you for the approval of having boxing back,” IOC President Thomas Bach said. “We can look forward to a great boxing tournament.”
