Jack Oliphant cut a jubilant figure after quarter-final victory in the England Boxing National Youth Championships 2019 – but admitted it was tough to box fellow national squad member Junaid Bostan.

The two talented boxers went toe to toe in the Youth Under-64kg category in what was, on paper, one of the stand-out bouts of the event’s first day at the Spiceball Leisure Centre in Banbury.

But it was Bodyshots’ Oliphant – who won best boxer in winning gold at the 2017 European Junior Championships just days after his mum had died from cancer – who put in the smarter work to win a unanimous decision against Steel City’s Bostan.

The Southern Counties boxer will now take on Clifton’s Manley Brown in tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) semi-final.

“It’s happy days for me because I know Junaid is a good boy. I know everyone expected me to win, so I did fell the pressure, so it’s good to get a good win out the way first up and I feel now I can go on to another level,” he said.

“We are good friends and we’ve been to the Europeans together for England. For some reason, it’s even more competitive and you want to beat them even more when you know them. You want to show you are the best.

“It was a good bout and that 100 per cent gives me confidence for the rest of the tournament because I got it done and I’m confident I can all the way and win the title.”

There was also joy for Gosport’s Mateusz Bereznicki in the penultimate bout of the day in the at Youth Under-81kg category.

The tall and rangy boxer secured a spilt decision victory over Attleborough and England’s Tommy Fletcher, who had stepped up a weight to box his opponent.

“I worked so hard for it,” said Berenznicki. “The first round I sort of worked him out, the second round I picked it up and in the third round I thought I outclassed him.

“I’ve trained hard for this and I’m buzzing for the semi-finals tomorrow. I’ve just boxed someone who is pretty much my height, 6ft 6ins, and I’ve never boxed someone like that before.

“I think that would have top rank as one of my best wins, if not number one, and I’m so pleased with my performance.”

Just two female bouts took place on the opening day and there was comfortable progress into the semi-finals for 2018 European Junior gold medallist Courtney Scott at Youth Under-54kg.

The Headland boxer secured a unanimous win over Mayflower’s Amelia Jarvis with an assured performance.

The other female action saw Manor’s Georgia Klein defeat Tommy Coyle’s Kelsey Uscroft, who was on the England Junior talent programme in 2018.

Elsewhere, Timperley’s Clark Smith – a national title winner at Cadet level last year – claimed victory over Atherstone’s George Bance, who won silver at the European Juniors in 2018.

The Under-69kg bout won a keenly-contested bout by a split decision, leaving his corner delighted.

But another cadet champion from 12 months ago, Repton’s Tyrieq Campbell, did not enjoy the same success as he went down to a unanimous verdict against Dan Toward’s Birtley in the Under-75kg category.
