Schools-age boxers looking to secure a place on England Boxing Performance Pathway (must be born in 2009 and 2010) – as well as EUBC Schools European Boxing Championships 2023 and GB Schools Three Nations squads – should note the following information.

This information has been released ahead of the England Boxing National Schools Championships 2023, which take place at the Guildford Spectrum this weekend (Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May).

Routes onto the Schools Performance Pathway

  • Become a finalist at the England Boxing National Schools Championships (Class A and B only). All boxers will be placed into the development phase initially. Boxers selected for the 2023 Schools European Championships will be moved into the Performance phase.
  • ‘Remain Boxers’. All boxers that were selected for a major international competition (Euros, Worlds, Olympic or Commonwealth Games, including reserves) in 2022 will retain their place on the programme. Boxers will receive a written letter confirming their place on the Performance Pathway in the Development phase.

The two phases of the Schools Performance Pathway explained

Performance Programme: is delivered to the highest level of boxers on the pathway.

Performance boxers will look to compete both nationally and internationally. This will include major competitions when the potential has been shown to win a medal.

England Boxing coaches will oversee individual athlete plans to make sure all aspects of the boxer’s development is taken into account. This includes boxing ability, athletic education and development as well as sport and exercise science.

Development Programme: is delivered to boxers who have shown potential and merit a place on the pathway to try and further develop.

Development boxers will be invited to training camps and where possible domestic competition.

Boxers will receive training with England Boxing coaches and occasionally alongside EB performance programmes, working on specific criteria to push them onto the next level.

EUBC Schools European Boxing Championships 2023 – eligibility for selection

The tournament is due to be held in August in Slovenia. Boxers need to have a robust training and preparation plan, therefore selection is planned to take place in June, with preparation training camps throughout July and early August.

All Class A and B champions will qualify for assessment in addition to any ‘remain boxers’ (selected for a major international in 2022), providing they hold a valid, in-date British passport (with at least six months remaining until expiry). Invitation letters with full details will be emailed to qualifying boxers.

GB Schools Three Nations 2023 – qualification

All England Boxing National Schools Champions (Class B only) in international weight categories will qualify to represent England in Wales at the GB Schools Three Nations in June.

Boxers must hold a valid British passport. If the qualified boxer is unavailable, injured or ill, the opportunity will be offered to the second-place boxer, followed by the third and so forth.
