August was a standout month for England’s Performance department, marked by impressive successes at two international boxing tournaments. England’s boxers brought home a significant haul of medals, underscoring the nation’s growth in the sport.

A 15-strong squad travelled to Banja Luka for the EUBC Schools European Championships, which took place from 1st-11th August whilst a team of 12 youth boxers represented England at the Brandenburg Cup in Berlin.

In Bosnia, the English team secured a total of seven medals, finishing third overall in the league table. Among the highlights, Billy Long was named ‘Best Boxer’ of the tournament, leading the charge by winning gold through a unanimous decision. He was closely followed by Letitia McKee and Summer Grigg, who also claimed gold after similar victories in their respective matches. Azaan Hussain added to the medal tally with a silver, while Jimmy Baker, Gracie Rochester, and Teigan King each took home bronze medals.

The Brandenburg Cup which is World Boxing-affiliated event, was held in Berlin from August 7th to 10th and saw the English team excel further. They claimed a total of eleven medals and clinched several prestigious accolades, including ‘Team of the Tournament,’ ‘Best Women’s and Men’s Boxers,’ and ‘Best Women’s Final Bout.’

Reflecting on his gold medal and the honour of being named ‘Best Boxer,’ John Joe Carrigan shared, “It was a pleasure to be part of this event. Competing against three different international opponents was a great learning experience, and I’m glad to have delivered strong performances. Winning ‘Best Boxer’ at such a prestigious international tournament topped it all off for me.”

Lily Deacon, who was given the title of ‘Best Female Boxer’, expressed her pride in representing England: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to compete at the Box Cup. With limited competition in my weight class back home, it was great to get these bouts. Being named the best boxer is something I’m incredibly proud of.”
