Team England’s senior squad secured the trophy for ‘Best Team’ of the tournament at the Enrique Rodriguez Memorial Tournament 2023 in Palencia, Spain – in what was only their second international competition since forming.

A medal haul of four gold, one silver and three bronze was enough to pip France to the crown by one gold medal and means the senior programme has claimed ten medals in the space of 14 days across September.

Vivien Parsons (Afewee), Freddie Pullen (West Ham), Odel Kamara (Salisbury) and Teagn Stott (Sheffield Boxing Centre) all claimed gold, whilst Beth Walsh (Training Cave) won silver and Louie Ward (Repton), Osama Mohamed (Lions ABC) and Lucas Roehrig (Dale Youth) all brought home bronze.

England Performance Lead National Coach Amanda Coulson said the squad showed some good signs with strong performances: “Our second outing for the newly formed England Boxing Senior Team has met and exceeded our expectations.

“Eight from nine boxers got to stand on the podium with all four gold medallists coming through three back-to-back victories to claim gold.

“The team’s efforts meant we pipped France by one gold medal to become the ‘Best Team’ of the Enrique Rodriguez Memorial tournament.

“This trip was a great opportunity for nine more of our senior team to gain international experience and the squad included three that attended the Silesian Tournament in Poland earlier this month.

“The medals are good but some of the performances were outstanding and showed that this young, inexperienced team have great potential.

“We are excited to continue developing and progressing as we plan for further camps and competitions to aid this process.”

Coulson was joined in Spain by coaches Jason Gledhill and Dean Sugden, along with physiotherapist Natasha Barnes and had compliments to pay to the whole team.

“It was a great team effort out in Palencia with coaches Jason and Dean, whilst physio Natasha played a pivotal part in assisting the boxers to ensure they remain in peak condition to perform.

“Finally, well done to all the boxers and the England Boxing-affiliated clubs who are doing a fantastic job of harnessing their skills and supporting them on their international journey with England.

“Roll on the next competition…”
