The first session of the 2020 Women’s Aspire programme was held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield yesterday (Sunday 1st March) and enjoyed by around 90 female boxers.

A broad range of attendees, from Schools through to Elite level, travelled from England Boxing regions around the country to take part, with experience ranging from those who have yet to box competitively to others who have had 40 bouts.

Around 30 coaches were also present, including those from clubs, regions and the England Talent Pathway, with the day led by England Assistant Coach John Warburton.

The theme for the day was punch preparation and execution.

“We’ve had lots of great feedback from the day saying how much the women and girls who took part enjoyed it and how much they appreciate the opportunity,” said England Development Coach Amanda Coulson, who organises the Women’s Aspire programme.

“From a coaching point of view, it has been great to hear that those who came along were sticking to the theme and constantly trying to make improvements throughout the day, which they definitely achieved.”

“These sessions are great for bringing extra opportunities to spar – both open and technical – and taking place in the GB gym provides added motivation.

“It’s also brilliant for the younger boxers to take inspiration from the older ones in attendance, who act as terrific role models.”

Other Women’s Aspire sessions will follow on Sunday 28th June and Sunday 4th October.
