In a stroke of luck that could rival any punch in the ring, local boxing enthusiast Keir Callaghan won £2,000 over the weekend in the Grassroots Amateur Boxing Lottery prize draw. The win comes as a significant boost not only to Keir but also to the local boxing community, which benefits directly from the proceeds of the lottery.

Keir, who is based in Sunderland, has been passionate about boxing ever since her family started taking part in the combat sport. Both her mum and younger brother attend regular sessions at Lambton Street ABC and find it to be a good source of discipline and fitness.

“My brother has been involved with the sport since he was just 8 years old and now is 17 – so you can imagine how much boxing means to me and my family, we’ve been involved for years.

Our local club is such a great environment for everyone, they really do make you feel comfortable, it’s like we’re all one big family there too.”

When Keir bought her tickets for the lottery, she did so with modest expectations. “I’ve been playing the GRAB lottery for a while, it’s so easy to use and I’ve just left it going really. Never thought I’d be lucky enough to win a prize, I nearly cried when I found out,” she laughs. “I just thought, even if I don’t win, at least the money is going to a great cause.”

The Grassroots Amateur Boxing Lottery is a unique initiative aimed at raising funds to support local boxing clubs across the UK. With amateur boxing often struggling for funding, especially in smaller communities, the lottery provides a much-needed financial lifeline. The funds raised go towards essential equipment, training programmes, and helping young boxers who might not otherwise have the opportunity to train.

Keir plans to use her winnings on her wedding which she is currently in the process of planning. “This has come at the right time really, it’s a big help and will go towards my big day!”

The Grassroots Amateur Boxing Lottery continues to be a beacon of hope for many local boxing clubs, proving that even small contributions can make a big difference. Keir’s win highlights the dual benefit of the lottery—giving individuals the chance to win life-changing sums while simultaneously supporting the growth and sustainability of amateur boxing in the UK.
