Junior Euros 2023: Three boxers progress to the next round
July 24, 2023 | by Chris Boyd
Team England endured mixed results on Day Four of the EUBC Junior European Championships 2023, with three boxers advancing and two falling to narrow defeats.
First up was England’s youngest female boxer at the tournament, 14-year-old Shannon Warren.
Warren came up against formidable Hungarian Vivien Kapcsos in an Under 70kg quarterfinal bout and it wasn’t to be for the Tamworth boxer as she bowed out via a 4-1 split decision.
Shannon gave 100% in her quest for a bronze medal and no doubt her time will come based upon that performance.
While there was a long wait between Team England’s first and second bout of the day, Ropes and Glory’s Adam Maca made sure it was well worth it for all.
In the most exciting contest of the England campaign so far, Adam was forced to come from behind to earn an RSC victory over Azerbaijan southpaw Orujali Javazade in their Under 57kg bout.
Having suffered a standing eight count in the first round, Adam was down on all five scorecards heading into the second.
However, Maca dug deep and showed his true grit and determination to force a standing eight count and, with momentum in his favour, he inflicted a further count in the final round to force the referee to stop the contest and ensure the Southern Counties’ boxer heads into the quarterfinal.
St Mary boxer Paul Coyle was in action next for Team England in Session Two on Day Four.
The male Under 60kg boxer was guaranteed tough opposition in the form of Georgian boxer Akaki Basaria and that’s how the contest played out.
With nothing separating the two southpaws after two rounds, Coyle went through the necessary gears in the third to grind out a unanimous points decision victory.
Last on for the Three Lions was Houghton Boxing’s Kevin Richardson.
Richardson was tasked with similarly difficult opposition with Under 63kg Armenian Alik Ktshoyan standing in the opposite corner.
In an all-action contest, Richardson battled through four standing eight counts to force his own before succumbing to a third-round referee stopped contest at the hands of the solid punching Armenian.
Sunderland East End boxer Ella Lonsdale had been scheduled to compete in Session Two, however, her Croatian opponent Ana Jukicic pulled out due to illness ensuring the Team England boxer progresses via walkover.
