Pilot Level 3 coaching course launches in May
February 5, 2020 | by Matt Halfpenny
England Boxing has completed the process of recruiting and selecting the first 16 candidates for its new Level 3 coaching qualification.
The pilot course will run from May 2020 for a year and aims to support experienced Level 2 coaches in building their all-round skillset, focusing on technical and tactical development, decision-making, problem-solving and reflection.
Candidates will undergo a combination of home and gym learning, practical workshops, guest speaker sessions and mentoring.
Where possible, England Boxing will make some of the content more widely available to the membership, and learnings from the pilot will be used to fine-tune the Level 3 before it is rolled out to more coaches in future seasons.
More than 200 applications for the first course were received from coaches throughout the country.
Shortlisting was carried out by an independent panel, followed by a series of practical assessments and interviews held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
Individual feedback has been given to all applicants as part of England Boxing’s commitment to improving its coach development offer across the board.
Boxing Director and Chair of Coaching, Hilary Lissenden, said: “This is a really significant milestone. There hasn’t been a Level 3 course for some years and our coaches are crying out for more high-quality opportunities for training and support.
“England Boxing is on a journey to reform its entire coaching pathway and this recent process has enabled us to gather vital information on what we’re doing well, and what we need to do better. We are extremely grateful to every applicant for the role they have played and for their time, honesty and commitment.
“At the same time as launching and delivering the pilot Level 3, we will now be using what we’ve learned to build a Level 2 coach support offer based on what people want and need – as well as to help inform England Boxing’s operational and strategic priorities going forwards.”
England Boxing would like to congratulate the 16 selected coaches, listed below, and to thank the coach educators and members of the Coaching Sub-committee for all their hard work on the Level 3 development process.
