Torbay ABC claim top spot at the Riviera Box Cup

Torbay ABC took advantage of home soil, winning seven gold and five silver medals to claim the top spot at the Riviera Box Cup 2024 – the third test event of the new Locker system.
The box cup is held annually in the picturesque Devonshire borough of Torbay and welcomes Junior, Youth and Senior boxers from the UK and beyond.
In addition to 12 medals and the top spot trophy, under 51kg boxer, Jed Baker picked up the ‘Best Male Boxer’ award to cap off a glittering weekend for the club.

The event was also the third test event for the new Locker system, following successful events in the Midlands and Western Counties, and provided valuable insights into the functionality of the system and the processing of information digitally.
Speaking about the application of the digital system, Mike Hemming, England Boxing Technical, Rules & Officials secretary said: “The Riviera Box Cup was a great test event for the Locker and the procedures that are needed to ensure a safe and free-flowing event.
“From a supervisor’s perspective, being able to carry out all the boxers’ medical and registration checks on the Locker prior to the event ensured the weigh-in ran smoothly.
“Anything that we felt could make events better and easier to run were fed back to the England Boxing office ahead of preparations for the National Development Championships.”
England Boxing’s Club and Community Manager for the South Richard Powers added: “We were thrilled with the success of the England Boxing Locker test event, which demonstrated the strength and potential of the new membership platform.
“The Riviera Box Cup was also a fantastic showcase of boxing talent, with over 300 boxers and 150 coaches coming together for a weekend of top-tier competition.
“The event was incredibly well-organised, providing a seamless experience for everyone involved. The level of skill, sportsmanship, and dedication on display was truly inspiring, making this event one of the highlights of the boxing calendar.”
Darren Asplen, founder of the Riveria Box Cup commended the efforts of England Boxing officials: “This was our fifth year and the best one yet.
“It wouldn’t be possible with the officials who volunteer their free time. They are the unsung heroes of amateur boxing and there are too many to name, but each one plays a vital role in making this event a success.
“I would, however, like to mention Jo Turner from Bristol Box Cup and Downend Police ABC, who as supported us from the very beginning and has been there every year to ensure everything runs well.”
